Werdenberg Skate

The predominantly flat route leads past the idyllically situated castle and the small town of Werdenberg. The route is tempting for fast skating on its long straight stretches. The scenery along the way consists of the limestone peaks of the Kreuzberge mountains, majestic creations of nature.
Starting at the train station in Buchs, the route leads through Bahnhofstrasse and on towards Werdenberg. The small lake is in an idyllic setting below the Schlossberg. The little town of Werdenberg is the oldest fully preserved wooden settlement in Switzerland. Its history is brought alive vividly in both museums – one up in the castle and the Schlangenhaus museum down by the lake. Don’t worry: there are no poisonous reptiles in the Schlangenhaus (“snake house” in English); it took its name from the drawings on its façade.

The village of Grabs is reached on local roads via Riet. Just outside it, you cross the Grabserbach and pass several farms. The next place on the route is Gams, located at the foot of the Gamserberg and the connection to Toggenburg. At an altitude of 470 m, you leave the highest point of the route behind. On the dead straight Ewigkeitsstrasse, is a long and superb stretch through lush meadows to Frümsen, and to the eastern Swiss village of Nussdorf. Did you know? The Staubern cable car is located here, the first cable car in the world to be operated independently in terms of energy and in an environmentally neutral way.

The route to Salez leads past the agricultural centre of Salez, which has received various awards for its architecture and environmentally friendly buildings. You turn here and follow the picturesquely renatured Werdenberg inland canal. Passing Haag, the route ends at the Buchs border station.
