The former Gaflei convalescent hotel, the first in Liechtenstein, was built at the very beginning of tourism but meanwhile has long belonged to the past. But the fantastic views from the sunny terrace towards the Alps of Eastern Switzerland are still there.
If you follow the steep road from the lower-lying hamlet of Masescha, you reach Gaflei; a sunny plateau at 1500 m belonging to the municipality of Triesenberg. From Gaflei, impressive views open up to the Alps of Eastern Switzerland. Gaflei was the first health resort with convalescent hotel in Liechtenstein. Gaflei is still a popular recuperation and excursion area, even if the former hotel no longer exists.
For many mountain hikers, Gaflei is a departure point for a hike through the Fürstensteig area. This trail, built in 1898, winds through the steep rock faces of the Alpspitze and Gafleispitze. Those preferring to take it more leisurely take the shady trail to Silum. The trail to the small observation tower, with views of the entire Rhine Valley, is even shorter. A picnic and barbecue spot is found at the foot of the tower.
Gaflei is also the culmination of a demanding bike tour from Vaduz. Because of its sensational downhill run towards Vaduz, the Gaflei Tour holds a special place amongst the vast range of trails in the mountainous part of Liechtenstein.
